Rubio Campaign Responds To Rachel Maddow With New Video

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Miami, FL – With MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow again using part of her show to attack Marco Rubio’s 12 simple ideas to grow the economy and create jobs, the Rubio for Senate campaign today released a new web video entitled, “Again, Rachel?” This time, the Rubio campaign is showcasing Maddow’s review of the disastrous impact that Charlie Crist’s leadership has had on our state, including record unemployment and soaring foreclosure rates. Rubio’s set of ideas ensures he will be the only candidate in this race who will go to Washington as a check-and-balance against the Obama-Pelosi-Reid policies that are taking our country in the wrong direction and offer a clear alternative.

Crist Economic Report: Obama-Crist Stimulus “Would Have Been Bigger”

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Miami, FL – While Marco Rubio has called for ending the wasteful stimulus program, Charlie Crist campaigned for it, lobbied for it, endorsed it and said he would have voted for it if he was in the Senate. And now this morning, Vice President Joe Biden says that the Obama-Crist “would have been bigger” if not for Republican opposition.

“Vice President Biden’s comment that the stimulus would have been even bigger if not for principled opposition by Republicans is exactly why Florida needs a check-and-balance in Washington today. Floridians know that Marco Rubio would be a vote to end the out-of-control spending in Washington and a vote for responsible economic ideas that create jobs. Floridians also know that Charlie Crist and Congressman Meek would be an automatic vote for wasteful Washington big government stimulus programs that have failed Florida and our nation,” said Alex Burgos, Rubio for Senate spokesman.

“Stimulus ‘Would Have Been Bigger’ But For GOP”
ABC News
July 18, 2010

Was the $862 billion stimulus too small? It probably would have been bigger, Vice President Joe Biden said, if it weren’t for Republican opposition in early 2009.

In an EXCLUSIVE interview on “This Week,” host Jake Tapper asked Biden whether, in retrospect, the stimulus was too small given the dismal jobs situation in the country.

“There’s a lot of people at the time argued it was too small,” he said. “A lot of people in our administration…even some Republican economists and some Nobel laureates like Paul Krugman, who continues to argue it was too small.”

“But, you know,” Biden told Tapper, “there was a reality. In order to get what we got passed, we had to find Republican votes. And we found three. And we finally got it passed,” Biden said.

But if it wasn’t for the legislative reality, Biden explained, “I think it would have been bigger. I think it would have been bigger. In fact, what we offered was slightly bigger than that. But the truth of the matter is that the recovery package, everybody’s talking about it [like] it’s over. The truth is now, we’re spending more now this summer than we — I’m calling this…the summer of recovery,” the Vice President said.

Rubio Comments on Florida’s Record Unemployment

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Miami, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio issued the following statement regarding today’s news that Florida’s unemployment rate has reached 12.2 percent, the highest level in recorded history:

“More than a year ago, President Obama and Governor Crist stood before the people of Florida and sold their stimulus bill as necessary for job creation. A year later, more jobs have been lost and today’s report is just the latest indication that the Crist-Obama stimulus has failed Floridians.

“Unfortunately, instead of moving in the direction of pro-growth economic policies, President Obama and the Democrats have only continued their push for costly taxes, more spending and burdensome regulation like the recently signed health care law. With each passing day, we put our economy into further danger by placing trillions of dollars of debt on the backs of our children and grandchildren.

“At this critical time for our nation, Floridians need someone in Washington they can trust to offer clear conservative alternatives that encourage job creation and stand up to President Obama’s job-killing agenda.”

Yesterday, Governor Crist “Touted The Fact The Economy Has Gotten Better.” “He also touted the fact the economy has gotten better and urged a Times-Union reporter to mention that homes sales are increasing in Florida. The Outer Beltway is a model of his philosophy, Crist said, because government is ‘empowering’ the private sector to do something.” (“Crist Says Beltway Moving Forward In Campaign-Style Speech,” Florida Times-Union, 3/26/10)

Pelosi: The Road to ObamaCare Began with Crist-Obama Stimulus

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

“And this began over a year ago under his leadership in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, where we had very significant investments in science, technology, and innovation for health reform – health care reform.” – Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 3/21/10

Rubio Campaign Statement
“Last night, Nancy Pelosi credited the stimulus as the first momentum-building step for a big government agenda that, without repeal, now threatens to force ObamaCare on the American people. Charlie Crist’s support for the stimulus wasn’t just an isolated $787 billion mistake, it also opened the floodgates for President Obama and Congressional Democrats to spend recklessly and ram through ObamaCare against the will of the American people.” – Alex Burgos, Rubio for Senate spokesman

Speaker Pelosi: “We would not be here tonight, for sure, without the extraordinary leadership and vision of President Barack Obama.

“We thank him for his unwavering commitment to health care for all Americans. And this began over a year ago under his leadership in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act [i.e. the Crist-Obama Stimulus], where we had very significant investments in science, technology, and innovation for health reform – health care reform. It continued in the President’s budget a few months later.

“A budget which was a statement of our national values, which allocated resources that were part of our value system and, in a way, that stabilized our economy, created jobs, lowered taxes for the middle class, and did so – and reduced the deficit – and did so in a way that had pillars of investment, including education and health care reform. Health care reform and education equal opportunity for the American people.

“And this – and this legislation tonight, if I had one word to describe it, would be ‘opportunity,’ with its investments in education and health care as a continuation of the president’s budget.”

Rubio Comments on Florida’s Record Unemployment

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Miami, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio issued the following statement regarding today’s news that Florida’s unemployment rate has reached 11.9 percent, the highest level in state history:

“At the one year mark, it’s clear that President Obama’s and Governor Crist’s stimulus has failed the people of Florida. What was billed by them and other proponents as a job-creating panacea has instead served to grow government and increase our debt. For the record, the only backs I care about in this race are the backs of our children, upon which big government proponents continue piling trillions of dollars of debt.

“Today’s jobs report is a warning sign to Washington. If President Obama and his allies finalize their push for costly taxes, spending and regulation initiatives like the health care reform bill, they will put our economy in even further short and long term danger. As President Obama and Washington Democrats prepare to ram through their government takeover of health care, they do so at their peril. It’s alarming my opponent doesn’t believe this plan should be scrapped.

“While my opponent is focused on trivial and fabricated matters, I remain focused on my campaign to go to Washington, stand up to President Obama’s job-killing agenda and offer an alternative that encourages job creation by providing entrepreneurs with the incentives to invest and assurances their risk-taking will not be penalized. The first needed step towards creating jobs and lasting economic growth is for Washington policymakers to cease their assault on the free market, beginning with a scrapping of the current health care proposal on the table.”

FLASHBACK: The Last Time Charlie Crist Did “Meet The Press”…

Friday, March 5th, 2010

MR. GREGORY: Do you think the president has the right prescription to ease this recession?
GOV. CRIST: I think he’s on the right track.

Here’s a reminder of Charlie Crist’s stimulus victory lap the last time he was on “Meet The Press.”

WATCH THE VIDEO

Between his negative personal attacks against Marco Rubio and his sudden interest in debating, it’s clear Charlie Crist is a desperate politician in search of a game-changer to distract from his support for stimulus spending, higher taxes and cap-and-trade. For someone who repeatedly ignored Marco Rubio’s year-long call for debates because he claimed he was “governing,” it’s also interesting that Governor Crist suddenly wants to debate just as Florida’s legislative session begins.

As Marco has said all along, he would be glad to debate Charlie Crist on Meet The Press any time after he keeps his commitment to debate first on FOX on March 28. After that, he looks forward to discussing why Charlie Crist was wrong to endorse and promote the stimulus the last time he appeared on Meet the Press.

Unfortunately for Governor Crist, no one really believes Marco Rubio is afraid to debate him, just like no one trusts him to stand up to Barack Obama.

Alex Burgos, Rubio for Senate spokesman

FLASHBACK: Following Passage Of The Stimulus In February 2009, Charlie Crist Took A Victory Lap On Meet The Press

GOV. CRIST: It’s not a matter of bucking the party, it’s a matter of helping the people. I mean, I really view it as an issue of what can I do that’s best for the people of Florida? We’ve got almost 20 million people that live in the Sunshine State now. I think my obligation is in essence the CEO of the state, to do everything I can to help us get through this tough economy. Certainly this stimulus package, about $12.2 billion to Florida, will help Florida an awful lot.

MR. GREGORY: You heard Governor Jindal on the program just a couple of minutes ago. Much different view, thinks they got the plan all wrong. You disagree with the government role that’s being exercised here in trying to fix the economy?

GOV. CRIST: I do. I think that, you know, there are times when you’re in a crisis and we all need to work together in order to get through those crises. And I think that this is one of those times. It is fundamental to be able to make sure that we help our children in school. This is going to help us in our education in Florida by about $3.5 billion. It’s going to help us with Medicaid, the most vulnerable among us who really need help and need it now. That’ll be in excess of $5 billion for Florida. It also helps us in road construction and producing jobs. That’s almost $1.5 billion for the Sunshine State. It’s fundamentally important that we help the people, we reach out to them, we understand they’re in a time of need. In the past five weeks, I’ve visited six unemployment offices throughout Florida. I look into the eyes of these people and I understand that the challenges are serious that they’re having to deal with, and I want to do everything I can to help them.

MR. GREGORY: There’s no Republican from Florida in Congress who supported the stimulus. One prominent Republican consultant said this about you and your support for it: “I don’t think he’s helped any national Republican ambitions he may have had by stepping up to the plate and batting for the other team. … There’s a difference between working in a bipartisan way for the common good and switching sides and putting on the other team’s jersey. At the one moment when we finally found our voice and remember who we are as Republicans, Charlie Crist forgets. It is stunning.” Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, also said nobody thinks you’re a fiscal conservative. Are you an Obama Republican?

GOV. CRIST: I’m a Florida Republican. And in the Florida way, we work together in a bipartisan fashion to do what’s right for the people. That’s really what it’s all about. You know, people run for office in order to try to help their constituents, the people of their state or their district or their country. In my case it’s Florida, and that’s all I care about. And in Florida we work across the aisle. My friends in the House and the Senate that are of the Democratic Party, I reached out to them. People like Robert Wexler. He wanted to have a paper trail for our elections. We had some embarrassing elections in the past in my state. I didn’t want my state to be embarrassed anymore. So I’ll take ideas from anybody. It really doesn’t matter if they’re a Republican, a Democrat or an independent; if they’re a Floridian and they care about the people of our state, I want to work with them to make sure that we have a better future and a brighter future.

MR. GREGORY: Do you think it’s a mistake for the Republican Party to define itself by opposition to the stimulus?

GOV. CRIST: Well, it may be. All I know is I have to do what I think is in the best interest of the people of Florida. And from my perspective, it’s to try and help them. Help them every single day in every way that I can in education, in infrastructure, in health care; do the kinds of things that keep us from having to raise taxes. You know, another part that people don’t talk about in the stimulus bill is that it cuts taxes. About a third of it cuts taxes. That’s an important thing for people to remember, I think, because people need a break. We’ve been able to cut taxes in Florida. We have reduced our property taxes. It’s the largest single tax cut in the history of my state. I’m very proud of that. At the same time, because of the stimulus we’ll be able to pay our teachers more next year than we were this past year. So I think it works, it works well, it helps people, it does what’s right.

MR. GREGORY: Do you think the president has the right prescription to ease this recession?

GOV. CRIST: I think he’s on the right track. I don’t think anybody says this is a perfect bill. I don’t. I don’t think even President Obama says that. But we’ve got to do something. We are at a time of need, and to do nothing certainly is not acceptable. This is not perfect, but we’ve got to do something to try to get our country back on track for the benefit of our people.

On February 10, Rubio to Mark 1st Anniversary of Crist-Obama Stimulus Rally

Friday, February 5th, 2010

February 10 event in Ft. Myers to be held at same venue as 2009 Crist-Obama rally

Miami, FL – To mark the first anniversary of the Ft. Myers Crist-Obama stimulus rally, U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today announced he will join Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey at a FreedomWorks PAC event next Wednesday, February 10.  The event will also mark the culmination of Rubio’s Stimulus Fundraising Bomb effort (http://www.stimulusbomb.com/), which was launched on February 1 with the goal of raising $1000 for every $1 billion wasted on the stimulus – $787,000 in total.

Next Wednesday’s event is precisely one year to the day that Governor Charlie Crist joined President Barack Obama at a pro-stimulus rally at the Harborside Event Center in Ft. Myers.  Just a week later, the President signed the $787 billion stimulus bill into law.

“Every day, I am encouraged by the growing support I see for limited government principles throughout Florida and our nation,” said Rubio.  “February 10 marks the first anniversary of Governor Crist’s embrace of a failed stimulus policy that has neither stimulated our economy, nor prevented the dramatic job losses that have taken a toll on over 1 million Floridians and families.

“Although Governor Crist may want Floridians to forget he ever endorsed this wasteful policy, this will be an opportunity to remind everyone about his pivotal role in putting our country down a path of reckless spending and bigger government.  Through Wednesday’s event and http://www.stimulusbomb.com/, I invite limited government conservatives throughout Florida and the country to send a message to Governor Crist that our government shouldn’t spend money it doesn’t have and that a return to limited government is what will make America exceptional and prosperous.”

The following event is open to the media:

Wednesday, February 10
7:00 – 9:00 p.m. EST

Crist Stimulus Flashback: A Year Ago, Crist Was Actually Working…To Help President Pass The Stimulus

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Miami, FL – Just a year ago today, Governor Charlie Crist departed from his typically lax 2009 schedule to actually put in some serious work to endorse, promote and advocate for the federal economic stimulus bill.

Although he would later claim he “never endorsed it,” February 3, 2009 was a day he did just that, writing a letter to President Obama in support of the $819 billion stimulus bill recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Crist: “We are writing to express our support for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which passed last week in the House and is under consideration currently in the Senate.” (Letter To President Obama, 2/3/09) READ THE LETTER

By that point, Crist had already:

  • Worked The Phones With Florida’s Congressional Delegation. Associated Press: “Most Republican governors have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama’s economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care. … Florida Gov. Charlie Crist worked the phones last week with members of his state’s congressional delegation, including House Republicans.” (“Jindal Will Accept Stimulus, But Would Have Voted Against It,” Associated Press, 1/31/09)
  • Started Making The Rounds On National TV In Support Of The Stimulus. For full re-cap of interviews: WATCH “CRIST IN HIS OWN WORDS: THE STIMULUS”

And showing that no deed goes unnoticed, President Obama himself called to thank Crist for his leadership in endorsing, lobbying for and promoting the stimulus:

  • Obama Calls Crist To Thank Him. (“Crist Gets Obama’s Thanks On Stimulus Support,” St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald, 2/3/09)

RUBIO CAMPAIGN STATEMENT
“At a pivotal moment during last year’s stimulus debate, Charlie Crist breathed air into the sails of the failed Democrat plan, while deflating Republican efforts to rally behind an alternative. Charlie Crist was wrong to promote the stimulus as sound, job-creating economic policy in the first place and he was untruthful to deny he ever did. Charlie Crist’s gross misjudgment and miscalculation on the stimulus has now condemned future generations of Americans with mountains of debt.

“Through www.StimulusBomb.com, we are holding Charlie Crist accountable for supporting a policy that has not stimulated the economy, failed to stop unemployment from rising, and left our children and grandchildren to pay for his mistake.” – Alex Burgos, Rubio Campaign Spokesman

Congressman Jeff Miller: Crist Has Nothing To Be Proud Of

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Pensacola News Journal
Crist Has Nothing To Be Proud Of
By Congressman Jeff Miller (FL-01)
Friday, 1/29/2010

Recently, this paper’s editorial page urged Gov. Charlie Crist to “stand up for the decisions he’s made, don’t apologize for them — and let voters decide,” referring specifically to his support for the $787 billion stimulus spending bill as “something Crist should be proud of” (“Let Crist be Crist,” Jan. 12).

Crist should stand up for the decisions he’s made, and we should all let the voters decide, but by any objective measure the stimulus has been a failure.

Despite promises to the contrary from Gov. Crist and President Obama, the stimulus has failed to create a single net job for Florida. Florida has shed 213,000 jobs since the stimulus passed, and our unemployment rate has seen a dramatic increase, from 9.4 percent to near the unprecedented 12 percent mark.

In addition, the stimulus didn’t solve Florida’s economic or budgetary problems, another promise made but not kept by Crist. Even after accepting billions in taxpayer-subsidized bailout money, Crist still signed into law a historic $2.2 billion tax hike to balance last year’s budget. I don’t know if Crist should apologize, but this is not a record to be proud of.

Floridians should not be fooled by Crist’s sleight of hand. He now says he will not apologize for accepting the stimulus, although accepting the money after the bill became law has never been the issue. Where Crist failed the people of Florida was in endorsing, campaigning and lobbying for the largest spending bill in American history, a bill which has burdened our children to mountains of debt, and which will lead to a massive tax bill that all Americans will have to pay.

The governor showed poor judgment born out of political opportunism. He called on me and my fellow Republicans to urge us to support President Obama’s stimulus, even going so far as to sign a letter expressing his “support for the American Recovery and Investment Act.” At the time, Sen. Mel Martinez questioned whether Crist even understood what was in the bill.

However, that did not stop the governor from having Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer send his minions to rally support for the bill across Florida.

Those of us who actually studied the bill knew we had to oppose it, because our country cannot tax, borrow and spend its way to prosperity. In the end, not a single member of Florida’s Republican congressional delegation voted for it.

Since then, we have seen peculiar behavior from the governor. After months of struggling to defend the indefensible stimulus (at one point famously denying he ever supported it in the first place), Crist seems to have settled on a new message. No one should be surprised. He is aware of the growing discontent in Florida over Washington’s endless spending and the big-government course President Obama has set for our nation.

Engaged citizens in town halls, tea parties and voting booths — of all political persuasions — are speaking in unison against Washington’s excesses and the same policies Crist has supported.

Citizens in New Jersey and Virginia spoke out when they held elections. Last week, it was Massachusetts. In seven months, Florida Republicans will get our chance to elect a nominee who will fight for the limited government principles that have made America exceptional. I am confident Marco Rubio will be that candidate.

Rubio has been consistent in his opposition to the stimulus, ObamaCare, tax hikes and bailouts. Floridians can count on him to be an independent voice for limited government and against the Obama-Reid-Pelosi agenda.

Marco will stand up for his record and his decisions, no apologies necessary.

Rep. Jeff Miller represents Northwest Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.
