Flashback: Crist’s Old Website Touted ObamaCare Opposition

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Miami, FL – Charlie Crist added to his extensive list of flip-flops yesterday by deciding to back President Obama’s massive government takeover of health care. This is the same ObamaCare law that Crist wanted to repeal both as a Republican and independent candidate for the U.S. Senate. It was only two months ago that Crist told NBC’s David Gregory that we needed to scrap ObamaCare and “start over.”

Crist, willing to say and do anything to win an election, has clearly decided that opposing ObamaCare is no longer in his best political interest and has abandoned his position from a mere two months ago. Does anyone, including the governor himself, know where Charlie Crist stands on anything?

In case you needed a reminder, the Rubio campaign uploaded this screen shot of Crist’s old “Health Care” issue page that shows Crist’s strong opposition to ObamaCare and support for repeal: http://www.marcorubio.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Charlie-Crist-on-Healthcare.png

See below for a brief excerpt:

“Charlie Crist strongly opposes the government run health care plan that was recently signed into law by President Obama and supports its repeal. . . . These health care opportunities are not found in Democrat legislation crafted behind closed doors by President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid that increases rates, increases taxes, and cuts Medicare.”

Rubio For Senate Releases New Web Video: “Say Anything”

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Miami, FL – With Charlie Crist’s flip-flop in support of ObamaCare this morning, the Rubio for Senate campaign today released a new web video entitled, “Say Anything”. In today’s Wall Street Journal, Crist “now says he does not support” repealing ObamaCare “despite pledging as a Republican to help repeal President Obama’s health-care overhaul.” However, Crist did not just pledge to repeal the government takeover of health care as a Republican. Even as an independent just two months ago, Crist supported repealing ObamaCare telling NBC’s David Gregory that “we need to start over”.  Considering that Crist has changed what he was saying even as an independent about ObamaCare, it’s clear that the governor’s numerous flip-flops have less to do with party switches than trying to say and do anything to win an election.

Will Charlie Crist Sign ObamaCare “Repeal It” Pledge? Would He Even Keep It?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Crist now says he’d repeal ObamaCare law, but his history of breaking campaign promises makes him unreliable

Florida Governor Charlie Crist has been inconsistent and equivocal on health care. First, he said he wouldn’t scrap the Democrat health care bill. Then he was silent on repealing it before public pressure prompted him to say he would.

And today, months after the Club for Growth launched its “Repeal It” pledge (www.repealit.org), Crist still has not joined Marco Rubio in signing it. Will Crist sign the “Repeal It” pledge?

“Charlie Crist is mistaken if he believes Floridians will take him at his word that he’ll go to Washington and stand up to President Obama on any issue, much less the new health care law, which he didn’t support scrapping,” said Rubio for Senate spokesman Alex Burgos. “Charlie Crist has made a career out of promising things to voters and then breaking his commitments. Perhaps he hasn’t signed the ‘Repeal It’ Pledge because he’s given up on signing his name to promises he knows he doesn’t intend to keep.”

BACKGROUND

On January 14, Rubio Signed The Club For Growth’s Pledge To Repeal ObamaCare If It Became Law. “U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today pledged to support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover that passes this year. In signing the Club for Growth’s ‘Repeal It!’ health care pledge, Rubio said, ‘The proposed government takeover of health care being rammed through Congress runs contrary to the principles of limited government that have made Americans the freest and most prosperous people ever. As a U.S. senator, I will sponsor and support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover passed in 2010, and replace it with real reforms that lower health care costs without growing government.’” (“Rubio Signs Club For Growth Pledge To Repeal Government Takeover Of Health Care,” Rubio For Senate Press Release, 1/14/10)

U.S. Senator George LeMieux Has Signed The Pledge:

Charlie Crist Signed A Pledge To Not Raise Taxes…And Then Broke His Word By Raising Them By $2.2 Billion. “Breaking a pledge against raising taxes, Gov. Charlie Crist signed Florida’s $66.5 billion budget into law Wednesday and barely used his veto pen. … Also, the budget includes $2.2 billion in new fees and taxes. … Democrats, particularly in the House, assailed the tax hikes. … By not vetoing the new taxes, Crist violated a no-new-taxes pledge he made on the campaign trail in 2006. He also has signed an antitax pledge geared toward governors, written by the conservative Washington group Americans for Tax Reform. Earlier this month, the Republican governor signed a similar no-new-taxes pledge for federal candidates now that he’s running for the U.S. Senate.” (The Times/Herald, 5/28/09)

Rubio Urges Support for Florida AG’s Legal Challenge to ObamaCare Law

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Miami, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today issued the following statement regarding Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum’s lawsuit challenging President Barack Obama’s newly signed health care law:

“The health care debate that consumed Congress for the past year was a political nightmare that showed Washington at its worst and ultimately produced a plan that should have been scrapped months ago. Now that the President has signed his health care plan into law, two necessary battles shift to the states – one to elect a new generation of leaders committed to repealing it, and another to stop this unconstitutional overreach from being forced on the states.

“Charlie Crist has been inconsistent and equivocal on health care. First, he said he wouldn’t scrap the Democrat health care bill. Then he was silent on repealing it and has yet to sign a pledge to Floridians promising to do so. And although he is a former attorney general himself, until today, Charlie Crist had been curiously silent on legal steps our state should take to prevent this law from being forced on Floridians. On the other hand, Congressman Kendrick Meek was far from missing in action, having been on the front lines of the ObamaCare movement and enthusiastically helping this flawed plan become the law of the land.

“Believing that the ends justified the means, Democrats proved there was no price they weren’t willing to pay, even violating the U.S. Constitution through the imposition of an individual mandate that forces Floridians to obtain insurance or be penalized. The new law also demonstrates their contempt for the Tenth Amendment, as it empowers the federal government while diminishing powers reserved to states and individuals. The efforts of President Obama, Congressman Meek and their allies have now left states on the defensive to protect their citizens’ freedom.

“Here in Florida, I reiterate my months-old support for Attorney General Bill McCollum’s legal challenge to protect Floridians’ freedom. As Attorney General McCollum has noted, the law’s individual mandate is an unconstitutional and costly infringement on state sovereignty and individual freedom through its tax on individuals that don’t purchase insurance. I commend Attorney General McCollum and other attorneys general around the nation for taking matters into their own hands on this important issue. It’s truly unfortunate this is what the health care debate has come to.”

Rubio Launches Petition to Repeal ObamaCare

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Rubio: “We cannot allow this debate to end now. I renew my pledge to undo this legislation and start over with common sense health care reforms.”

Miami, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today launched a petition drive at http://www.marcorubio.com/repeal-it, urging voters to stand against Congressman Kendrick Meek, President Obama and the Democrat Congress by repealing the health care legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last night.

“Yesterday’s vote puts our great nation on a path away from the limited government principles that have America exceptional,” said Rubio. “Earlier this year, I pledged to support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover that eventually passed. I reiterate my strong support for repealing it when I get to Washington and offering alternative reforms to make health care more accessible and affordable.

“Kendrick Meek was wrong to vote for this policy, and Charlie Crist was wrong to believe it should not have been scrapped weeks ago,” added Rubio. “I urge Floridians to join me in supporting the repeal of this flawed plan. We cannot allow this debate to end now, and today I renew my pledge to undo this legislation and start over with common sense health care reforms.”

Pelosi: The Road to ObamaCare Began with Crist-Obama Stimulus

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

“And this began over a year ago under his leadership in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, where we had very significant investments in science, technology, and innovation for health reform – health care reform.” – Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 3/21/10

Rubio Campaign Statement
“Last night, Nancy Pelosi credited the stimulus as the first momentum-building step for a big government agenda that, without repeal, now threatens to force ObamaCare on the American people. Charlie Crist’s support for the stimulus wasn’t just an isolated $787 billion mistake, it also opened the floodgates for President Obama and Congressional Democrats to spend recklessly and ram through ObamaCare against the will of the American people.” – Alex Burgos, Rubio for Senate spokesman

Speaker Pelosi: “We would not be here tonight, for sure, without the extraordinary leadership and vision of President Barack Obama.

“We thank him for his unwavering commitment to health care for all Americans. And this began over a year ago under his leadership in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act [i.e. the Crist-Obama Stimulus], where we had very significant investments in science, technology, and innovation for health reform – health care reform. It continued in the President’s budget a few months later.

“A budget which was a statement of our national values, which allocated resources that were part of our value system and, in a way, that stabilized our economy, created jobs, lowered taxes for the middle class, and did so – and reduced the deficit – and did so in a way that had pillars of investment, including education and health care reform. Health care reform and education equal opportunity for the American people.

“And this – and this legislation tonight, if I had one word to describe it, would be ‘opportunity,’ with its investments in education and health care as a continuation of the president’s budget.”

Rubio Comments on U.S. House’s Passage of ObamaCare

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Rubio: “This debate does not end today. We cannot allow it to if we are to preserve the freedoms that have made America an exceptional nation for centuries.”

Miami, FL - U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of health care reform legislation:

“Today’s vote puts our great nation on a path away from the principles of limited government that have been at the core of our democracy. This health care bill embodies all the things Americans have come to despise about our political system: more spending, more regulation, backroom deals, secrecy, misinformation, flip-flops, politics over principles, demagoguery, pandering and broken promises.

“The American people oppose this legislation not only because it is bad policy but because it was crafted behind closed doors and is being forced down our throats. Those who choose to focus only on the immediate impact of this consequential vote, and how it will factor in November’s elections, fail to appreciate the lasting damage it will inflict on our nation’s health care system and economy. The bill’s impact will be felt far beyond 2010 because, ultimately, a generation too young to fully understand what happened in Washington today and future ones not yet even born will bear the burden of this costly vote.

Earlier this year, I pledged to support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover that eventually passed. While I am dismayed that we have reached that point, I reiterate my strong support for repealing it and offering alternative reforms that will lower health care costs without growing government and breaking the bank. I also reiterate my months-old support for Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum’s efforts to prevent an unconstitutional federal health insurance mandate on Floridians, and urge the Florida Legislature to take immediate steps to prevent this health plan from being forced on the people of our state.

“Fortunately, this debate does not end today. And we cannot allow it to if our nation is to survive the failed politics and policies that have plagued Washington for far too long. We cannot allow it to if we are to preserve the freedoms that have made America an exceptional nation for centuries.

“Today’s vote will continue to be part of my debate with Charlie Crist, who has repeatedly placed his faith in bigger government and wasteful spending, and who refused to support scrapping this bill.

“And I guarantee this issue will be a major part of my debate with Congressman Kendrick Meek, who tonight cast a vote that will have lasting consequences for Floridians. Once again, Congressman Meek has shown an unhealthy willingness to go along with an agenda that threatens to cripple our nation with bigger government paid for with money that we don’t even have. Floridians cannot afford to send him to the Senate, where he will oppose repealing this health care plan and continue being a reliable vote for the Obama agenda.”

On Eve of ObamaCare Vote, Rubio Urges Florida’s Congressional Delegation to Vote “No”

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Miami, FL – On the eve of Sunday’s ObamaCare vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today urged Florida’s entire Congressional delegation, particularly Reps. Allen Boyd, Suzanne Kosmas and Kendrick Meek, to vote against the proposal:

“On behalf of over 10,000 Floridians who signed our ‘Scrap It’ petition and millions more who oppose ObamaCare, I urge Florida’s entire Congressional delegation to vote against this proposal. Across our state today, Floridians are partaking in rallies, tea parties, vigils and other expressions of opposition to ObamaCare. They are rightly concerned that the unthinkable is about to happen – our country’s leadership is about to take the first step towards government-run health care that we can’t afford and that will fundamentally re-define our health care system and economy for the worse.

“I am particularly dismayed that Congressman Boyd and Congresswoman Kosmas are ignoring their constituents by suddenly deciding to switch their votes at the 11th hour. U.S. Reps. Boyd and Kosmas join Kendrick Meek in disregarding Floridians who believe that the current plan should be abandoned in its entirety. Time is running out, but it’s not too late for them and other Democrats to save their constituents and our nation from the lasting consequences of this ill-fated plan.”

More than 10,000 Floridians have signed a petition (http://www.marcorubio.com/scrapit) sponsored by Marco Rubio demanding that President Obama and Congressional Democrats scrap the health care overhaul being rammed through Congress in favor of a new, bipartisan and transparent approach.

Rubio Comments on Looming ObamaCare Vote for U.S. Reps. Boyd & Kosmas

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Miami, FL – U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio today issued the following statement regarding Congressman Allen Boyd’s and Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas’s announcements that they will vote in favor of ObamaCare this Sunday:

“It’s unconscionable that Rep. Boyd and Rep. Kosmas intend to vote for a bill that will ramp up spending, increase taxes, hurt seniors and lead to government-run health care. Now is a time for principled leadership, not Washington-style politics that ignores Floridians and imperils our nation’s future.

“Floridians deserve leaders they can trust not to bend in the wind on a critical issue like this, whether it’s to the demands of party bosses or to try to win a primary.”

Another Top Florida Republican Disagrees with Crist: ObamaCare Should Be Scrapped

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Attorney General Bill McCollum Yesterday: “There is no benefit to this bill. I can’t conceive of any.”
Crist Three Weeks Ago: “Crist says he would not scrap Dem health care reform” (Palm Beach Post, 2/27/10)

RUBIO CAMPAIGN STATEMENT
“Just like Charlie Crist’s embrace of the stimulus, his opposition to scrapping ObamaCare pits him against Florida Republicans and on the side of Democrats, who are looking to ram this bill through Congress over the objections of the American people. At a time when President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are scratching and clawing their way to forcing ObamaCare into law, Charlie Crist’s opposition to scrapping it is like a wind in their sails.”

McCollum Pushes Back On ‘Forced’ Health Care: AG Readies Constitutional Challenge, Urges Other States To Join
By Kevin Derby
Wednesday, 3/17/2010

Attorney General Bill McCollum declared Tuesday there is “no benefit” to the federal health care legislation supported by the Obama administration and invited attorneys general from around the nation to join him in preparing to challenge the policy on constitutional grounds.

“There is no benefit to this bill,” McCollum said of the pending health care reform. “I can’t conceive of any.”
McCollum sent a letter to Attorney General Jon Bruning, R-Neb, president of the National Association of Attorneys General, along with a memo arguing that both the House and Senate bills are unconstitutional on the issue of individual mandates.

“I’ve challenged, in my own legal analysis in this office, the constitutionality of individual mandates,” McCollum said during a news conference.

McCollum said that with both the U.S. House and Senate using reconciliation bills, it is likely the health care legislation will pass soon.

“The president may very well sign a bill by the end of this week,” he said.

According to his legal analysis, McCollum said Congress cannot force citizens to purchase health care. It does not have the power to enact such a mandate. In his analysis, McCollum also drew upon precedents to argue that states have the right to sue the federal government to protect their interests.

To prepare for a lawsuit, he said, “We’re putting together a working group of the [state] agencies most harmed by this bill.”
That group includes the Office of Insurance Regulation, the Agency for Health Care Administration, the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Health.

“We simply know it’s going to fiscally hurt these agencies,” McCollum said. “That’s what they’re telling me.”
